Danbury Boys Nail Down 10 Points in 4x400 To Win Open

By Mary Albl of DyeStat

The small Class S school Derby almost slayed the Class LL school giant Danbury. Almost.

Neck and neck with just the high jump pending and the 4x400 relay yet to go, the Danbury boys sealed the deal by clocking 3:20.87 to score 10 points in the relay.

Danbury won its first State Open Track and Field since 2011 title Monday evening at Willow Brook Park, tallying 51 points. Derby finished second with 46.5.

“I just felt confident that we were going to execute our events,” Danbury head coach Rob Murray said to GameTimeCT. “I felt confident because the guys on the team, they trust their experience, and they trust, more importantly, the tradition of what Danbury track and field is.”

Senior Leon Campbell of Hartford Public won the boys 100 (10.93) and 200 (21.92).

Danbury senior Daniel Nichols (9:09.91) edged out Fairfield Prep senior Drew Thompson (9:10.75) to win the 3,200.

The Southington girls literally threw and jumped their way to the program’s first State Open title. Led by Amanda Howe's wins in the shot put (40-4) and discus (132-3), Southington scored 35 points to claim the team title.

Teammate Janette Wadolowski picked up five points in the javelin, finishing fourth with a throw of 117-8. Senior Megan Biscoglio tied the Open pole vault record, clearing 12-6 to score 10 points for Southington.

In the sprints, sophomore Terry Miller of Bulkeley set Open records in the 100 (11.72) and 200 (24.17). Miller is a transgendered athlete who competed as a boy through the winter indoor season. She also finished fourth in the 400 (57.61). Carly Swierbut of Newtown won the 400 in 55.48.
